I've heard RAID 1 reduces latency when reading off the hard drive, is this true? Something about how it starts accessing the information off whichever drive's head is closer to it.

From what I understand of it, RAID 1 is just disk mirroring. I suppose you would get a very small increase if the controller was smart enough to know which head is closer, but once the data is found it will just read from that one disk. I think RAID 1 hurts your write performance though.

Yes you are correct. A mirrored set is slightly faster then a single in reading and slightly slower in writing due to positioning of the head, however the difference is so tiny you would never know the difference, not even in most benchmarks.....
