20/12/07 - The day the UK stopped...

Any ideas as to why there have been no updates to the front page since the 20 Dec. Surely some kind of link to the US updates is called for if the editor is on holiday. The recent split has perhaps left us the very poor cousin, and lets face it aside from US-Only boutique builders there is very little that is of no relevance to UK enthusiasts (all of the current headlines on the US site are relevant, only the triple SLI Mach V was less relevant recently as it is US only but still of interest).

News is often released later to the UK version compared to the US version, even though we are between the Source (far east often) and the US in terms of time zones and therefore editorial time.

If we are to be independent of the US site, can we try and make it better than it, in the end no-one loses as it is all 'in the family' and will keep the US editors on their toes as well. The risk is that the UK site becomes so subordinate to the US site that it becomes pointless and we all look at the US instead, then it becomes an overhead and not an asset, lets face it the localisation issues from the US to the UK aren't exactly difficult.

ye... im disgusted. i think we need to show these tits some good old british imperialism lol

(only joking by the way) toms hardware is great... but cant see why we havnt got an update 4 sooo long.... i need my fix maaayn!

I don't bother looking at the uk version of tomshardware anymore. Its just rubbish. It never gets updated regularaly, the layout is horrible and unlike the US version it doesn't have the scrolling forum section. Just type in .com instead of .co.uk to go straight to the U.S site.

I do normal follow the US site, but there is the potential to do more (or in fact something) with the UK site to make it worthwhile having one.

The problem with reading the US site is the forums... You always find people starting talking about graphics cards like:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130072
I start to feel very depressed when I read about EVGA 8800GTX's for like 200.00 GBP equivalent!! Like why did I have to fork out 50% more here in the UK....

The forum is the same everywhere in the world. Its the only consistant thing. I get pissed off with the prices they quote. Especially at current exchange rates Newegg etc shipped to the UK we would be laughing. I want a 3870 but refuse to buy it at the current prices. They are a joke. Also the HIS ICEQ3 version I want is only currently stocked at overclockers who are milking it for every penny.

When will people in this country stand up for it self....

Im not going to rant how bad this country has become since Labour / Liberal or what ever their real policy came in to power 10 years ago but this Labour is not for the common working man is it...

Every time something comes in to this country its the tax that we pay, import duty.... then vat at 17.5% with out the profit tax sold to us from the company who sold it

How much is this government taking off us in tax.......

To make matters better even if we pay tax, the tax man wants to investigate us even further down the line to drain our last bit of money....

Technically a 350 dollar card should cost us 175 but oh no it costs us 3-350 in uk pounds...

remember some countries pay 40p in our money per litre and a gallon of petrol in the states is on average $3.05 and in some states $6 a gallon...... Still remarkable alot lower than us....

Mortgages are cheaper, loans are cheaper, cars are cheaper, technology is cheaper, everything is cheaper...

So why do us mugs still pay.... We need a shake down from the consumer, boycot fuel stations on certain days - we need to act if we want this sorted once and for all and stop these people ripping us off.......

Lets all rally together as a nation and dump this stupid government for ruining our heritage and countries identity by selling out to Europe...

Bring back everything what we stood for 30 years ago in the Queens Silver Jubilee and be friends with each other and have street parties........we were a lot happier back then....

Im only 24 but I totally agree.

What are our kids gonna do when they leave school after spending 12 years being 'half taught' in lessons because some iraqi / pakistani / slovakian / polish or latvian parents DO NOT SEE ENGLISH as a worthwhile language to teach their children whilst they're 'LIVING' in the UK.

So that means teachers spending far more time teaching the basics of english to a set of people who's parents DONT AGREE WITH IT, leaving our truly British kids to fend for themselves in these lessons most of the time. And we wonder why the standards are dropping?

How often do you see 'ethnics' in this country yelling at their unruly kids in jibberish? On a day to day basis for me... I mean, WTF! This is Britain, the language is English, you want to live here? Speak it yourself and teach you bastard kids it.

So most kids these days leave school and have 'what' to go to? In Doncaster, there's just been 4 major construction projects (since 2004), which is the Racecourse, Football Stadium, Shopping Centre & College.... MOST OF WHICH EMPLOYED POLISH WORKERS and wouldnt even consider an Englishman for the job. Where's the equality here?

I wish there was something that could be done about it all but there isnt.. nobody has the nuts or means to make a difference these days.

If Labour are voted in again at the next election this country is doomed.

This country has been doomed after the first time Tony Blair started lying.....

Oooh about 8 years a go,,,,

A man whos disgustingly ugly wife (IMHO) who was paid £250,000 to go to Australia for a charity even whos event didnt even make the amount if money the Blair Witch Project cost to be at the event...

How someone can charge for a charity even is unreal....

Both went round with complete contempt for the British public loving every one else appart from the real British worker who pays taxes at an exorbitant rate...

Puts up National Insurance to Self Employed people which immediatley adds and astonishing £2000 uk pounds to their tax bill.....

March 19, 2008 11:08:21 AM

Get over it. Our direct taxation is actually lower than most of Europe. Indirect taxation is a different kettle of fish but we do not pay that much tax in the UK. Try working in Holland and watching 50% of your income go.

Charging for public appearances for charity functions is quite common amongst the celebs so I don't see why you slate Tony for making a few £ ont he way out. The fact that the organisers were stupid enough to pay that much says more about the quality of the charity than Tony.

I'm not a fan of Blair but if you want to pick holes in the man there are lots of other more valid places to start... Like ignoring 3 million voices saying not in my name...

Mainly spelling badly...
March 19, 2008 5:49:59 PM

it was not until you pointed it out that i realized that it was the same name as the clothing shop. And so what if my spelling is crap i try my best any way spelling does not have a direct reflection on intelligence, i think that is attributed to ignorance. and just because we are on a tech site and we are computer enthusiasts does not make us any better than any body else weather they can spell and have good grammar or not.

Doh........

What difference is direct or indirect taxing - well all have to pay it unless you a scrounging scumbag.........

I wish I was only paying 50% tax - calculate it up buddie, we pay more......40% tax brackets - oh self employed - no add £2000.00 plus for national insurance which was a added tax burden and nothing to do with national insurance... add 40% from the house when you die.. mmm what else council tax, fuel tax, booze tax, import duty - imported anything from the amazon.com lately - ah thought not......, inheritant tax --- prices of water and gas and electric going up with tax, vat etc..

Calculate how much tax is actually being paid....

Its not like we dont need water or electricity or gas. its what we need to live....I would gladly have a solar panels and / or windmills powering our homes but cant afford it due to the price of energy... Next....

Go down the local market, ponder around and find a cheap canteen selling bacon rolls and hotdogs..... then try and smell the cheap coffee...

Anyway its due to Holland we got the WEEE Directive which is another load of money making crap ( for the uk anyway ) where all the electronics gets shipped to China and India where people are open to Toxins...

Yeah really eviroment friendly....

Find out whats really going on and come back when youve learnt something

So you fail to see that I have a choice over indirect taxation? I can buy a smaller car and use less fuel, I can drink Cider and not spirits. You talk about prices going up with tax, electricity and gas being examples. Yes you are paying more tax on them but this is only in proportion to the increase in the cost of goods. As far as I was aware the 17.5% VAT rate has not changed in a good few years. You also talk about inheritance tax - strange how on the death of my last grandparent we paid nothing in tax. Did they have nothing? - NO. We simply applied some thought and bought the house of them 10 years ago and rented it back to them for a nominal charge. Go see an IFA and see how much you could save.

You talk about self employment. If you feel you are paying to much tax then get an accountant. Seriously have you ever maxed out on the claim? HW purchases can be written off over 3 years, how many other things can the self employed claim as business expenses? Don't get me wrong - I'd love to take home a gross wage but then I'd only have to pay for things out of my own pocket anyhow. Yes there is massive waste in many of the services paid for by taxation, I used to blow £10k of your taxes a year in an old job just because people never kept the appointments I made for them (exam entries if you are wondering).

As a scrounging scumbag that has not worked a single day this year (my job was outsourced to India at Crimbo) I'd just like to make the point that I have yet to take in benefit payments (including housing) the amount I paid in tax on my final wage. I had the same situation when I was ill for a couple of years, over the two years I was unable to work I cost less than I had added in the previous two years of tax.

If you want lower taxes either start making people aware of what they cost the system or accept that you are going to have to give up some of the services they pay for. You can't as they say have your cake and eat it.

"90% of our council tax goes to London to pay for their muckups.... "

I'd love to see the evidence on that...

Read your council tax bill. Your local authority has to break down where the money goes that it receives from it's citizens each year. Plus, each authority receives millions more in extra grants, subsidies etc to top up the money they are allocated from central funds.

The reason we pay more and more each year in council tax is to pay for all the largesse and corruption that's abundant today. Nowt to do with London. Point the finger of blame at the people who run your local council. When you find out just how much your elected council member cons each year for simply sitting on a committee, you'll be staggered. How many backhanded deals go on when it's supposed to be a fair and proper tender. How the brass fcuk over the majority with "Single Status", lopping thousands off salaries whilst they remain exempt.

Blame your local politicians.
