I have a TiVo series 2 and am trying to hook it up to my desktop. I am
sharing a wireless network connection with my roommate next door, with
my wireless PC card, so my old ethernet port is not being used. How can
i connect my TiVo to my computer ethernet adapter? Do i need to plug it
into a router first? Can i just use an ethernet crossover cable? And
why can't i just connect my USB directly from TiVo to my PC? And if I
use a wireless adapter on my TiVo, it would have to be configured
through my roommates router, right? My PC wireless card won't
"recognize" the wireless adapter on my TiVo, or will it?

lots of questions,
danny

You should be able to connect it with a crossover cable. You will have
to statically set the network setting though.

Because it's not a mass storage device, and the video is not stored as
simple files on the Tivo.

You might be able to get a peer-to-peer connection from your PC to your
Tivo over your wireless card, but the Tivo won't get Internet
connectivity that way (without setting your PC up as a router with
*another* network connection), and you won't be able to be connected to
your roommate's router at the same time.

Your best bet is to connect it to the router.

There are also wireless bridges designed to work with
X-boxes and PlayStations that will fill that need. That
way you stay wireless and no extra cables running around.

You can get a USB ethernet adapter and connect your PC to the Tivo. Then you
can setup Internet Connection Sharing on your PC so that Tivo can get to the
internet through your wireless adapter and your friend's router.

Or you can get a wireless USB adapter for Tivo and connect to the wireless
router directly. This is the simplest way to do it.
