Hardware player?
In theory, any player that will appear as a mass storage device via a USB
connection will be platform-independent. Unfortunately not all the
USB-connecting devices seem to follow the rules correctly and don't work
on all platforms. There are some that do though. I don't know how well
these work on Macs though. And, of course, the Windows boxen are really
limited to XP because of poor USB support in earlier versions.
Failing USB support, you are really limited to devices with removable
storage that can be loaded seperately from the player by anything that
can take an adaptor that it will plug into!

Ahh... marketing... :-)
Probably the Ipod because of Apple's high profile and high-powered
marketing - particularly aimed at non-techie people. Those who want
versatility, good audio and better value for money - and have the
technical ability to know what they are looking for - tend to look
elsewhere.
