As you have probably guessed I am a newbie...are there any motherboards out there specifically designed for use of the higher end DDR modules ie PC3000 and higher (DDR 400+)?? If starting from scratch ie no memory at all is there much of an advantage to PC3000 or DDR 400 over PC2700?

No.

 Good or Bad have no meaning at all, depends on what your point of view is.

it depends....are you talking about intel or amd motherboards?
for amd motherboards...the fastest supported ram would be ddr333 (pc2700).
for intel...the sis 645DX chip officially supports ddr333 but it "unofficially" supports ddr400 (pc3200).

Some motherboards that support ATA 133 also support pc2700 but nothing above that. You could just put in pc3000 which might offer a little boost but not much. the Epox-8k3a and the Soltek Sl-75drv5 support pc2700 ram.. and thats just the two that i know of.
