Hi All,
I acquired an older comp with a Pentium II processor, 128mb memory and Win2000 operating system. I'm looking to get the best and cheapest modem for what I have. I'm not familiar with modems at all as I've been using cable access. Thanks for any and all help!

The best inexpensive modems are those which use the Lucent 1646T00 chipset. Manufacturer doesn't matter. Price is $15 at most online dealers. These modems have low enough system overhead that I've actually been able to use them with 486's.

It uses the LT winmodem chipset, supports V.92. I was even amazed to find the "call waiting" feature as part of the V.92 standard worked when this guy got a call while he was on AOL. The connection was still active once he hung up the phone call.
