I'm NOT a big audio buff - just don't have the ear for the subtleties of
good sound quality. However, I have an iPod and want to listen to Oldies
Rock & Roll music through the FM radio in my car.
What would be the best audio file format for me to use when saving songs?

Probably MP3. If you're using an FM transmitter to play through the car's FM
radio, then you wouldn't need better than 128 kbps bit rate. Of course, if
you're using your ipod for other types of listening, you may want to
increase the bit rate to something around 192 kbps. That will permit fewer
songs to be stored but for many, myself included, it's not a worry since I'm
not sure I could fill up a 40 GB ipod with music I really like. Also, the FM
transmitter approach is hit and miss: results vary GREATLY depending on the
transmitter, your car, the strength and number of FM stations in your
locale. For me, the cassette adapter works better but I realize fewer cars
today have a cassette player.
