regular participant here already knows this]

High-tech calibration equipment has its place, but nothing works better
than this tried and true, ridiculously simple method.

1) Place the subwoofer in the LISTENING position.

2) Put on a CD that you know has good lower base extension and play it
at a fairly loud listening volume.

3) Now, physically get down on all fours and slowly crawl around the
parameter of the room. Listen for a 'sweet spot' where the base is
noticeably tighter.

THAT's where you should position your subwoofer!

That's a good trick, but the results depend on the key of the music that's
playing. Remember, the response in a room varies by location *and*
frequency. If the music's frequencies don't align with the room modes, this
technique may not work as well as expected. I think a better solution is to
play pink noise or some other "broadband" low frequency source while you
crawl around.

Yeah, but it's really hard to judge the quality and "tightness" of the
bass in pink noise!

I think "Pink Noise" is the name of a Japanese girls rock band.

Mike,

The only thing you can achieve with subwoofer placement is a change in low
frequency response. Modal ringing, which is what determines "tightness,"
will be the same regardless. This is why speaker and sub placement (and room
EQ) can never be a substitute for bass trapping. Only absorption can reduce
decay time and modal ringing. And even the most ideal placement still leaves
lots of peaks and deep nulls in the response. But placement is a good first
step.
