Desktop cannot connect to internet through Ethernet

I just did a fresh install of Windows XP 64 on an old computer (Asus) in my house. It's connected to an ethernet cable, but when I try to go online it says there is no connection and explorer "Cannot find server".
I'm getting so frustrated.... Please Help

Open a command prompt and type in "ipconfig" does that show any devices listed? If not you probably need to install the drivers for you network card, which you could download from asus website.
