PCMCIA wireless network card with external antenna ?

I have an old Dell Inspiron notebook out in my shop which I use basically for woodworking stuff and playing music. I have a D-Link 802.11G pcmcia card installed on it. On rare occasions it will pick up signals from my house computer. What I would love to do is to upgrade to a card that would have enough range to consistently connect with my house computer,but there are so many to choose from I'm totally confused. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

what kind of router do you have?

if you only have a G-router, it might not send out a strong enough signal.
