Sorry, my real question has nothing to do with replacing the master HD, but with the necessity of re-doing Microsoft Updates afterwards.

I plan to install a new "C" drive, format it, and then copy my existing Windows folder to it. I will re-install Windows using my four year old Windows98 CD.

Afterwards, will it be necessary to download and install previously installed Microsoft updates?

Can Microsoft updates be saved and not installed? MS doesn't seem to allow it.

Should I post this question on the proper forum?

Thanks and regards - Steve

Well, unless you never go online, it's necessary to download and install MS critical updates. How else can you protect yourself from Windows' and Internet Explorer's stinkin' vulnerabilities?

Anyway, if you want to download all the patches for future use, just head on over to the Corporate website. Personally, I think there's too many patches to keep track of. Too bad Windows 98 is going to lose support soon.

If I were you, I'd get some disk imaging software, such as Drive Image or Norton Ghost. When you do that clean install and get all the necessary updates, image that to another partition or CDR. That way, if you choke something, you can go back to this fresh image, just the way it was before. If there are any newer updates, you can just download and install them, then create an updated image.

Lastly, why does this matter if you have DSL? If you had dial-up, this shouldn't be as much of an issue.

Bryan - It matters as I like to keep my registry as clean as possible (Some kind of fetish I guess). Twice I've screwed up Windows and had to re-install even though I loaded the back up registry.

I like your image suggestion!

Thanks for your reply and enjoyed your site - Steve

I totally understand how you want to keep your registry clean. It's not a fetish...everyone feels the same way. Sort and search through Fred Langa's website to see what he has to offer, for anything really. Plus, sign up for his newsletter, because it's really helpful.

Just for the record, that image suggestion has been passed down from people like Fred Langa and ToeJam (THGC) to me. So, most everyone around here probably does this. But, I always say that in case someone hasn't heard of that suggestion yet.

Good luck!
Bryan

P.S. You didn't sign my guestbook! (j/k) Later...
