Hello,
Totally confused as to why my 64 bit laptop keeps "locking up". It becomes totally unresponsive, on the majority of occasions it is necessary to press the power button for 6 seconds to switch it off. The problems only started occuring after I upgraded the memory from 4Gb (2 x 2) to 8Gb (2 x 4) supplied by crucial. I have ran the windows memory diagnostic program and memtest86, both of which detected no problems. If I re-install the original memory there is no issues.
The symptoms are telling me that the memory is failing however the diagnostic testing indicates otherwise.

Hi :)

If you put back the old stuff and its fine its obviously its the new ram at fault....

Three choices...

1, Wrong speed ?

2, Faulty...

3, Motherboard in your lappy has LIMITED slots (wont run 4 gb pieces)

All the best Brett :)

Points:

1) Try testing each new stick one at a time (see your motherboard manual for which slot to use with only one stick)

2) run Memory tests using MEMTEST ( www.memtest.org)

3) update your motherboard BIOS (may add a memory profile for your new RAM)

4) Lower the frequency (with just one stick) in the BIOS if all else fails

+1
You didn't tell us your laptop's model.
What does the specification say about memory?
