I have a chance to buy a used DSR-920 that only tunes in analog
channels. The price is good, if I can fix it to get digital channels.

Is this likely to be a battery or other simple problem?

I currently have a GI 650i, so an analog only box would not be very
useful.

Also, will the remote from the 650i work on a 920 / 922?

Thanks,

It depends on what you consider to be a good price.
Analog receivers appear to sell for about $5 in my
area. I saw a nice Uniden with RF remote yesterday
in a sale shop for abused women yesterday for $6.50.
Chances are- it may just need reauthorization. I lost
my digital channels last week, and a quick call to
Netlink got me back watching TV. This has happened
on more than one occasion with my DSR-920.

From what I understand, if the battery goes dead, then
the entire motherboard must be replaced. Not a winning
business proposition. Make sure you get the battery
replaced ASAP if you buy it! My receiver is coming up
on 3 years old- I'll probably replace it next year.
After 5 years, you're just living on the edge of converting
your working DSR-920 to an expensive paperweight if you
don't have the battery changed!

Probably not.

It depends.

Is the unit no longer authorized for 4dtv channels?

Or is worse: ie: if the battery has died, then the unit may have lost it's
unit ID,in which case the motherboard would have to be replaced by sending
it to ATS -about a $200 job!

If the UID in the menu doesn't match the one on the back it is a
paperweight.

They are actually great analog receivers, but until someone comes up
with a way to clone or modify the UID, if the battery inside dies you
are SOL on digital.
