ok so i just bought a maxtor 160gb drive. model #4g160j8, and windows XP recognizes it as a 127gb drive. I am running an ahtlon xp 1800+ on an ECS K7S5A board. What can I do about this? Thanks in advance for any replies!

You may need to update your BIOS, and then buy a ATA/133 controller card to see all 160GB, such as mentioned here.

Promise Technology's Ultra133 TX2 Controller Card Supports Maxtor's Fast Drive™ and Big Drive™Technology

Maxtor also provides a ATA/133 controller card:

Ultra ATA/133 PCI Adapter Card

Your K7S5A mainboard does not support ATA/133 ... it is limited to ATA/100 and 28-bit addressing.

You might also wish to use the Max Blast II software to partition and format the drive, which can overcome some size limitations that are directly related to the BIOS. But even that may not take you beyond 137GB, without an ATA/133 controller card.

If you install a new PCI controller card, the hard drive will need to be repartitioned and formatted again while connected to the card.
