Gateway nv53 notebook has lost its wireless adapter

My Gateway NV53 laptop has suddenly lost the ability to connect wirelessly to any network. Ethernet connection works fine. Wireless light is turned on, but laptop does not "see" any wireless networks. It is as if the wireless adapter is no longer there. It does not show up in Device mgr.
This was working fine for a while. Don't know exactly when it dissappeared.

Tried restoring to factory defaults and it is still not there.

one of the Function keys might enable or disabled the wifi.

Thanks, but been there/tried that. Wireless light is on. I can turn it off and on at will, but it still doesn't see the wireless adapter in the device manager.

the F6 key will only turn your Bluetooth On or Off.

above your F-Keys should be Capacitive Touch Keys (like Mute, Volume Up or Down). the third one from the left should be your Wireless button to turn WiFi on and Off like displayed on page 24
