If your looking for a good Hard drive player, I'd say the Cowon M3L or
Cowon in general is a good bet. They make some really nice machines.
Typical Korean machines but they make em nice.

check www.iaudiophile.net for some reviews on the M3L. Or the M5 even.
Dont let the pictures fool you. The thing is just as small as an ipod.

I don't know the specific models. But, as a basic principle any ipod
will be (a) overpriced and (b) may be tricky to use with anything
except a mac.

Seems the software for the Mini comes in both Apple Mac and IBM Clone
versions.

Looks like the Creative Zen Micro is PC only. It has won some sort of
award, but hasn't every thing?

As for price, it looks like a $20 difference to me.

Careful not to jump to conclusions based on propaganda.

So did the software for the original iPod. I got called out by
several PC users to make it work. Often the best I could do was to
get it functioning between crashes.

So other makers are creeping up to the iPod price point, are they?
Understandable.

Propaganda tells me Apple products, although pricey, are easy to use
and faultless. Experience tells me otherwise.

Ever installed an iPod? The packaging must cost more than the
product. Nothing wrong in going for the fashion market. I install
iPods because the trendy young Miss wouldn't be happy without the
logo. It's been Apple's salvation. But recognise it.

I tried for a long time to persuade my daughter to go for the zen micro but she still went
for he ipod mini.

Been using one of the six gig (£169) ones for a couple of months on a PC. Been rock stable so
far on both home ripped and iTunes stuff.

The Mk2 version of the four gig mini at around £135 doesn't strike me a grossly overpriced.

As for your experience telling you that an Ipod mini isn't easy to use.. How much simpler
could it be ?

It's kind of hard to say who's fault that is, isn't it?
I spent a lot of time to prove to MS that features in MS products are
not working as advertised.

if you want to get paid for your time, a Macintosh almost always will be
cheaper.

Easy to use: yes, faultless: no, of course not.

Not my experience though.

You seem to overestimate what packaging costs.
Nice looking packaging cost mostly because you have to put some work in
it to make it look nice (design), but not because of production cost.
For large volumes the design costs tend to become negligeable.

But there's nothing to keep you buying another machine of course :-)

Easy enough to use. Not, in my experience, all that easy to interface
to a PC.

I'll second that; my iAudio M3 ($260 shipped from newegg.com) is simply
excellent.

The in-line remote means you can pop the main unit in your pocket (or your
gym bag, whatever) and clip the remote to your shirt. The little LCD screen
is on the remote.

I sprung for a pair of Koss Portapros and the sound is unbelieveably good.
I've never had a portable player that could go loud enough for me; the M3
does.

Piece of cake. I unpacked the box, installed iTunes on the PC, plugged in
the dock, inserted the iPod. Was downloading music onto the iPod within
minutes.

It was as easy as it was connected it to my Mac(s)

Bought one yesterday. No trouble at all and I didn't read the instructions.
Now experimenting with the AAC stuff.

hey baelzar and to everyone else in general. I'm trying to propagate a
new newsgroup called alt.audio.portable-device where it has to do with
devices whose primary function is audio. Like reviews, pictures, specs,
technical information that the audio companies don't want you to
know.(like the exact dimensions of muvo's screen.) I'm discussing it
over at alt.config under Proposals:...

Ipod mini is slightly smaller. My G/F has one but the batter life isn't
up to much. I've got a bigger 40Gb Zen, but the software is just as
easy IMO to use. (no problems running the two side by side on my
laptop)
Neither crashes on my laptop, I like the look of the zen micro and I
beleive it has a radio too?
Ipod is a pain when it comes to (eventual) swapping of the battery, zen
a doddle.
Go to dixons and have a try to see what you think.

Ah yes but iTunes Windows requirements Windows XP or 2000.

Nevertheless a friends Mac iPod interfaced seamlessly on a Win98SE PC with
a trial download of http://www.mediafour.com/products/xplay/

USB or firewire.

With a friends Mac iPod interfaced seamlessly on a Win98SE PC with
a trial download of http://www.mediafour.com/products/xplay/ - in Explorer
- I then used Winamp 5.0x to play some of his AAC .m4u files natively.
Much nicer modern interface than the old versions, if not quite iTunes.

Sadly I shortly after lost the lot in a disk failure. Still, it works.

Didn't have so much luck with a freeware one, for some reason, then.
http://www.ephpod.com/download.shtml

Other programs rip or convert to mp4 / AAC, and it seems good to me.
