I stopped at two "Big Box" electronic stores. They only had Normal bias
tape. I found Sony brand High bias tape at a Kmart. Hopefully it is as good
as the Maxell I used to buy.
All this makes me wonder how long cassett tape has? It is my best way to
make quality stereo recordings with microphones. All the digital stuff is
expensive and the consumer stuff is junk or has noisy mic amps.

You might check music stores like MediaPlay or Virgin Megastore. I
know Virgin carries high bias tapes (TDK "pro", possibly others). Sony
wasn't one of my favorites, as I recall.

Don't think a product not being available at the big box stores
means it's not available at all. You can still get 74-minute CDR's
(which, presuming the 74 minutes takes up the whole spiral, and all
other things equal) are more likely to be playable on older CD players
at Tape Warehouse <http://www.tapewarehouse.com>, but I haven't seen
them in any of the big retail stores for years.
Likewise for audio cassettes, see the above link.

Because the cost of recording CD disks is so low, and the quality is so
high, the popularity of cassette tape is dying. In a few years it is going
to be extinct. I am seeing new integrated systems coming out, that no longer
have cassette tape capability, but CD is standard.

If I could get digital recording media for location recording that sounds as
nice at such a low cost, I'd consider switching.

You should look at professional minidisc recorders. They tend to cater
more to professionals . . .hence the name Now, as digital recorders
go, you should be able to easy find high quality unit. For example, I
have an iriver flash player unit with voice recording capability. The
audio recording capability using it's built-in mic is astounding. I was
just looking for adequete. At its highest quality setting you get full
frequecy response etc. For professional recording, you may want somethin
g a little more, ther must be a mic pre-amp available that will bring up
a pro mics signal to line level. If that's the case, combine with a pro
mic, the flash player, and the mic pre-amp connecting between the mic
and the line-in jack on the flash player, you would get very high
quality stereo recordings. If the mic preamp is small enough, both the
flash player and amp could fit in your shirt pocket. My flash player is
the size of 3 AA batteries wrapped togetherby a rubberband.
