Hi,

I have an oppotunity to get an amplifier that has a problem, and I'm
just trying to get a feel for how fixable it might be.
The amp is a fairly modern IC type device, made by Yamaha.

The problem is that the right channel drops out when the tone controls
are enagaged. If it is in 'Direct Mode' both channels are ok.

Any ideas on what this might be? Is it likely to be fixable by me?
(I'm practical but not an electronics engineer)

Maybe one of the switches in the tone bypass section has failed.

If you have good eyesight, a good light, a magnifying glass, a voltmeter and
a logical mind, you might be able to verify this by checking signal path
continuity, comparing the left and right channels.

Fixing it is another matter; if it is the switch, it may be unrepairable,
and you may find it hard to describe the switch in sufficient detail for
anyone to be able to identify a replacement. And if you do get the
repacment, you may find it awkward to fit, because of the small dimensions
in modern equipment.

On the other hand, you might be able to add in a wire to bypass the switch
and set the tone controls permanently on!

Typically, a "contact cleaner" (a chemical) will salvage the situation.

A few switches use closed construction and cannot be cleaned without
breaking them open -- but the sealed switches are not as prone to
developing this problem.

Not as likely, but there could also be a broken wire or printed circuit
trace.

A very thorough visual inspection is always helpful.

Thanks all, for the advice. I missed it in the end, but it probably
wasn't a good deal anyway.
