Where's Flammy when you need him?

The Wife (why do these things always start with the Wife) hit the remote on the garage door opener & it would only go up 2". I go WTF!! Go out in the garage hit it & yep 2". I start looking around & the cables on both sides are loose. Don't remember that before! Get to looking closer & found the dam main tensionor spring to lift the door, broke in half. Yea, it was about a 5' spring, now it is in 3' & 2' pieces!!

Well, I'm screwed! I can't lift the door. My 4 x 4 is trapped in there & I can't get it out! I have no Idea how much that door weighs, it's insulated, & it's all dead weight to try & lift.

If Flammy was around, he'd probably be able to lift it like his weights & I could get the truck out!!

I haven't a clue of what to do with it, or how to even go about fixing it! I got a feeling it's the start of a nightmare today, really!

I build machines for my insurance agent & gave him a call! He said we can come up with something & get it covered, somehow. We'll see!

Meantime, I've got to get my truck out of there!!! Any ideas!!

Uh, the door shouldn't be that hard to lift, did you pull the emergency release?

Have you tried getting some friends over for a few beers and a brainstorming session. Even if you fail to fix the door you have had a good day.

Well, it's hardly my fault that everyone chose that morning to throw themselves off buildings! Made the papers, you know. "Lemming Sunday," they called it.

You'd think!! I have no idea how heavy it is, but it's heavy. I've got a heavy duty Lift Master door opener & it won't budge it. The pieces that go across it start bending when you try & lift from them. I can't get it up far enough yet to lift it from the bottom.

Going to take some creative engineering to solve it! I've been thinking, when me son's come over today & the 3 of us get it from the bottom & then have the wife hit the door opener to help us lift it, that might do it. I don't think the opener will hold the weight though! Step ladder isn't tall enough to let the truck out. So it will be the ladder & something on top of the to get that truck out!

It's a fine friggen mess, I'll tell you!

That's pretty much the plan at the moment! I don't know if I can buy the spring at like Lowe's or not. I'll have to at least take mechanism apart & off the door to change the spring!!

Hook a comealong to the door pull point and to the rear of the drive rail of the garage door opener, and winch the door up, support it with 2x4s in the raised position so it won't fall, stay out from under the door during all this, some of the doors are heavy enough to kill you, if it fell on you.

Garage doors r my specialty...we have this messed up remote that doesn't work half the time and unless someone's on the inside there ain't no opening to it. The little hole where u can manually make the motor work is kinda retarded and u risk frying it everytime u use it, so my dad doesn't let anyone use it (what a pity it'd be if the door fried...then we could get a new one). So, half the time, unless Buddah, Allah, Jesus, God, Vishnu, and all the rest of the good guys decide to make the remote work, I'm yankin it up. I doubt it's that heavy tho. If ya gimme a sled ride to yer house I'll help ya:)

I thought about that, but then thought better of it!!

We got the door up & rescued my 4x4!! That horse was getting panicky in the barn being trapped like that! Now it will just be mad sitting out under the stars!

It wasn't as hard as I thought. Just needed some beef, is all. I couldn't get it up to my ankles, by myself! The boy's latched on it & up it went. I couldn't leave it open though. I've got way to many tools & power equipment in there to leave it open. So, I got it open & then shut it until it gets fixed. I have a double door on the back of the garage for the tractor to go out & I also have another door off my front porch. I can make things do, to a point. I normally sit in the garage with the door open, sipping on some beer while the grandson does his thing in the yard. I've got to change all of that until it's fixed. I hate it when my drinking habits get messed up!!!

I'll see what the insurance does with it today!

RC , if you replace the spring watch out when you adjust it . Every time you turn the adjustment wheel lock it in with a pin ( could be screwdriver ) as it can take your finger off . Adjust it with the controller released and watch out adjusting it to much as i did once and when i started it up it almost went out through the back ha ha . Adjust it just enough to assist when raising . Is yours a woodin door , they are pretty heavy ................................Has anyone had trouble getting on here . I could not get on all day sunday . No trouble going to other sights , just Toms .

There was some kind of problem yesterday on the forum. I was on early, & then about 8:30. After that, I never got back on at all. Seems to be fine today.

I do know that spring is dangerous for sure. It's one of them on a shaft that goes over the top of the door. They put a chalk line on it & then put so many twists in it to lift the door. I think the whole thing is out of whack. RC had a problem once with it!!

Can't remember exactly what set it off now, but I ran out of the house, into the 4x4, hit the door opener & backed up before the door was open!! Just caught the top of my shell, but broke the bottom panel. PF was right about driving the 4x4 out of the garage!!

Had a company over & they did some fancy pop riveting, it's a fiber glass door, & kind of banged it up. Well that was 4 or 5 years ago & it's finally broke. My insurance man swears he's going to get a new door put on there! How, I haven't a clue. I'd take a new door though, I at least need the bottom panel.

I hope that is a fluke or something with the forum yesterday!!

My agent just called & put me on a conference call with a door company. They are coming out about 11:00 or 12:00. Agent told them he wanted it replaced this morning!! So, I don't know if I'll have a new door today? My deductible is $250, he said that's all I'll have to pay.

Worked on a friends computer yesterday RC, worst case senario, he had a Pentium 75mhz that the CPU cooling fan had failed, the cpu got so hot, the heatsink is bonded to the CPU and I can't separate the two from each other, I've never seen that before, I didn't realize the earlier Intels got that hot, needless to say the computer is totaled, its about time for him to upgrade anyway, don't you think.

yeah well, life is still going so i cant complain.

Steph and I are at a stalemate in the proceedings as of now and we are still talking so there is a little life left in our relationship(actually we had a pretty good weekend together) and hopefully the "peace talks" can keep going and we can recover from this. But I recieved some bad news from my Father yesterday, His partner in his business wants to split the business and basically take control of the whole show, I think. So my dad might be looking for a new job here soon. its tough to get a job at that age too, so we are praying for him.

other than that, just been workin and trying to be good   .

I installed FarCry on my Win98SE but it ran real choppy, had to lower my settings to get the thing to run smooth, that surprised me cause my system ain't slack at all, and I've not run into this with any other games at all, the box says it will only run on Win98SE, Win2K, and WinXP, you're running WinXP right? Did you have any performance problems with the game on WinXP??? I'm dual booting so I can run it on XP if it prefers XP, but I really don't know if thats the problem or not.

I'm running it on XP. I don't think it's the OS though. It puts a hurt on my TI4600. That's my feeling. I believe it over heats the card, even with the door fan blowing on it. I get a lot of artifacting after I'm playing awhile. I was wondering if I burn up the card if PNY will replace it? I doubt it.

I've never had a game put as big of hurt on what I'm running though!

Too late for that RC its in the garbage and the computers been disasembled for parts, its HISTORY, M/Bs chipset was affected, hardrive screwed, it was totaled, I think the only thing that might have escaped damage was the 16mb of SIMM RAM it was running, so I salvaged that. I think the HDD was on its last legg anyway. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 11AM.

FarCry run on 98SE with the settings lowered runs good, since I'm dual booting I'm going to run the thing on WinXP Pro and see if it does any better at all on that OP/SYS, to find out if one OP/SYS runs it better than another does, I'm only running 512mb of RAM that may be a factor, and also I'm going to see if I can get the thing virtual CD'd to the hardrive, to run it straight from the Hardrive instead of the CDROM drive, this is a massive game though, I've never run across a 5 disk installation.

I'm hoping you two can somehow reconcile your relationship, if the love between you is the real deal, you will get back together its just a matter of time, and if it doesn't happen that way, it just wasn't meant to be. I know this is extremely hard for you right now, sometimes the not knowing and the uncertainty is the worst things to deal with, but it will get better no matter which way it goes. Going through a separation and possible divorce really sucks, it seems like you whole life is in a limbo state, but there is light at the end of the tunnel, and you will come through this thing, I know!!! I've been there!!! My prayers are with you!!! Ryan

Pf my sons got a simular problem . He come home from Iraq and wife said she didn't wanna be married anymore . She had been going to clubs and stuff since he left , but said she had not been messing around . Although he caught her in one with 2 guys after he came home ( got in a little trouble on that one , sorrta whipped the guys and just got outta servin a little jail time , cost him 2500 dollars for legal fees ). She seems like a nice woman , but maybe has not grown up yet , i like her a lot . She says she don't wanna devorce but don't wanna live togeather neither . Been going on 6 or 8 months now . Like Ryann says at some point somethin has to happin . Some one has to make up their mind , and like you he wants what is best for her , but , can't wait for 30 years ha ha . My self i don't wanna be with no one that don't wanna be with me , and thats what i told him . If they get back togeather i will love it , but if they don't its the same . It sounds like Steph is confused as to what she wants also . I do hope every thing comes out all right , like i told my son . There has to be a time though , year , two , etc. . Everyone can't be in limbo .

Yes the forum was locked out for a bit yesterday I thought it was the bit on the Iraqi prisoners that got it shut down.

All I wanted to say was did you pull the emergency release on the garage door but could only get as far into the forums as the topics in each area like Other and CPU's.

Yes if you do the spring replacement on your own be very careful in fact if you don't know how it works exactly pay to have it replaced. Not worth having your arms snapped off like a twig or a torque bar jammed through the side of your skull.

Some springs are the lateral transverse type that need to be wound up those are real dangerous if you have never come across those before, even pro's hate those. The inline springs are not as bad but can still kick like a mule when you load the tension up on the cables.

Plus for a spring to fail like that there could be a mechanical problem some place else in the rails for the bogy wheels that the power opener draged the door down over but snapped the 5 inch tension spring.

No more pain , pain in the butt not being able to walk though , but i get around . A little funny some times though ha ha . Grand daughter wanted to push me around in a wheel chair so this weekend we went to the BIG CITY , and then a maul . She had a ball , was there about 4 hours till she got worn out ha ha .

Still gotta some problems though , 5 weeks after surgery it still swells up like a basketball and turns a pretty shade of purple ha ha . Goin in wendsday and he is gonna make a desisition , might have to do it all over ( God forbid ) . A friend of mind went in the hole about 40 feet ( i was connecting with him ) and after the did his they had to go back in and fuse all the bones ( no movement in ankles ) but at least he can walk a little . Hope that isn't the case but will have to see . I am getting to old for this stuff .

I'm a full time Master Carpenter, that happens at the present time to be working on a project thats completely outside, Computers are spare time work and basically a Hobby for me right now, if all I did was repair computers, I'd probably hate it and be completely baldheaded, sometimes they can really test your patience. I'm also an Electrician but the Carpentry is where I get my most enjoyment, its a real gift from God to be able to create something beautiful from nothing, and leave it behind for others to enjoy, my most favorite Carpentry projects are extremely detailed stand alone finished units, like custom built Entertainment Centers, Gun Cabinets, different types of stairs, Spiral Staircases are my specialty, and sometimes outside things like what I'm working on now, a screen porch added to a nice Lakehouse, which is why I'm rained out today. I don't have any employees I do all the work myself, which sometimes is tough, but allows me to control the output quality of the project, but is really satisfying in the end because I don't have to share the credit with anyone either, and the customers I have know that, my business is completely word of mouth, with my customers screening who they reccommend me to, which saves me a lot of grief.

As far as I know Mike, its not illegal to make a CD image to your hardrive just to play the game that you have legally purchased, now its illegal to make copys and sell them, or even give them away, but not to run a game from your hardrive.

HAAAAAAAA i kinda thought so as you asked about tiein off , as most people wouldn't know that ha ha ha . I find out now , been on my mind awhile ever since you asked that . ...Well i was thinkin about puttin a deck up out side , you could stay here ha ha ha . I am sorrta a perfectionist also , but on commercial jobs they want you to go so fast that goes by the wayside ha ha . Could have used you on a stack we put up about 25 years ago , used slip forms and only went up 598 feet . Now thats what i wouldn't wanna fall off of ha ha . Put up a scrubber unit on a power plant about 5 years ago , had guys from all over there , they come in with 150lb belts on , big 7/8 sleevers and every thing . Lost all them about 100 feet up ( 50% of work force ) , lost about 5% after 200 ft. . Makes a big differance ha ha . . I loved it when i was younger but will have to addmit , not as much now .
