Wireless routers that work with Vista and Windows 7

I have a Belkin F5D7234-4 V3 which I have set-up but does not work.
Am with Virgin cable etc they say I need their router/hub
Is that correct?
What am I doing wrong?

Last time I cabled a router to a Virgin MODEM it was simple enough - just pop a cable from the MODEM into the router's uplink and ethernet cables to the PCs into the other ports. Wireless then worked first time but maybe Virgin are insisting on selling you their equipment now.
