Can i upload pictures from my phone to pc using a usb cable

Hi

Ive just purchased a USB cable off ebay so that i can get pictures off my
phone to my PC. I have read that this is not possible and some say you can.

Have i wasted my money as i wanted it to be able to download pictures to my
pc
