I have a dbx tx-1 tuner with only noise in the fm output.
The am tuner works, panel works. Can you tell me what are the common
failure modes for this tuner? Any recommended general tuner
repair books?
Thanks.

Without specialized test equipment your chance of success is low and
the process will be frustrating.
Lots of things can go wrong. From your description it is likely that
the front end was hit by a lightning induced surge or a static
electricity transient. (I assume that the normal FM antenna is still
connected)
I don't recommend messing with the front end unless you know it has a
problem. (proper test equipment will help you confirm this) If you move
or bend anything in that area, you'll need the test equipment to put
things right again. Even having the test equipment will not guarantee a
successful front end repair because experience is important here.
