My speakers came with a NEC computer but they are perfectly adequate
for my needs. The other day the power block that plugs into the power
strip just broke and its a danger to continue to use it. Can you help
me locate a replacment?

Look for the power jack polarity symbol on the speaker or wall unit.
(If there are no markings, a voltmeter will show you. If it is still
working, the counter person should be able to measure it for you)
Go to Radio Shack and buy a replacement 12VDC unit with the same
connector AND Polarity.
The power rating needs to be 650 ma OR higher (it does not hurt to
have more *available*)

Should be a common enough item. Likely replacement available off the
shelf at your neighborhood Radio Shack. (Assuming you are in North
America.) Note that the size/polarity of the connector is critical and
you must match it exactly. RS has dozens of connectors to choose from
so they make it pretty easy.

I did go to Radio Shack. They had a 1000 ma 12vdc unit and after
checking the polarity a gender bender plug. The problem with their
unit is the plug+case is so big it overlaps many of the outlets on my
battery backup / surge protector. Not only that it was just about $20.
If I get it, I'll need a 6 in extention cord to connect it to the surge
strip. So I still use the other outlets.
Is there an alternate vendor that might have something closer to the
original unit?

Of course we don't know what the original unit looks like.
Did you try to get a replacement from the manufacturer?
For 3rd party replacement, I'd go to www.jameco.com and look at their part number 252822 But you may have to
splice the proper connector since they don't have those
interchangable ones like Radio Shack.
