I have a large file that I recorded from streaming audio. I would like
to run a program that will find the gaps and break the files into
individual songs. Does anyone know a program that can do this ? I
don't mind relistening to the file and placing the breaks in the file
just so as long as it can break it into individual files.

Thanks,
Chris

Almost any audio editor will let you do this manually. Most ripper tools
which can accept input from sources other than CD can do it.

Finding the gaps automagically means recognizing which silences are
inter-track gap and which are just a pause in the sound. Depending on
the material that may or may not be easy (rock musicians have forgotten
what silence sounds like...). I'm sure some of the tools will mark every
silence of over N seconds as a break and then let you tune the value of
N or mark agree/disagree, but I haven't had reason to investigate which
have this sort of automation and/or how well it works.

"If it happens, it must be possible" -- and it's simple enough that you
should have no trouble finding it.

I have Goldwave, which gives a visual display of amplitude versus time, so
finding the gaps between songs can be done quite rapidly.

However, the actually cutting of the signal into separate songs and filing
them takes whatever time it takes for disk I/O transfers. And it's easy to
make errors when you've been doing it a while.

GoldWave. It's shareware but has a very generous free trial period.
