Black screen after logon with mouse cursor

My nephew was playing a game on the family computer and out of the blue it quit working. They tried reboot but no desktop, apps, nothing just a black screen. When you press ctrl, alt, and delete th blue screen will appear listing lock, sign out, task manager, and etc. You could bring up the task manager. I thought just because they never shut it down that it maybe have become hot and stopped working, but don't know. I have searched and searched for what would fix it but I have no luck. Not even mention this isn't the first problem they had with it. The first was unable to connect to the internet by wifi and the other problem was a more difficult topic to explain. Please help

I have tried holdin down shift and pressing f8 - didn't work.
