I'm in the process of updating my 300A also, you can download the software
and instructions form http://www.pansatusa.com/download.htm

I ordered the Serial Null Modem 6ft. DB9-F to DB9-F cable from
http://www.pccables.com/cgi-bin/or [...] cgi&rcode=

This will be my first time doing this, but I see no reason why it shouldn't
work.

You need a straight through cable.
