What is the brand/model of your drive? You might want to look into hard drive cooling devices.

If you cant touch it, its too hot!! You need a cooler as soon as possible or at least a case fan blowing on it. You are playing with fire (well not really it wont burn) having a drive that hot.....

depends on
A. speed of drive
and
B. age/era of the drive

generally
faster = hotter
but
newer design = cooler

new 10k and 15k rpm drives are very fast, but not too hot fortunatly due to their advanced design.

old drives however got amazingly hot
my old ibm 16Gb got very hot
and the even older 2gig seagate got blisteringly hot!

if you have a new drive and its getting hot something is wrong. either a malfunction or extreemly insufficient cooling.
