I haven't seen one in quite a while, but most likely it has a "tape monitor"
button or switch which is associated with a set of "Record Out" and "Tape
In" or some similar labeled jacks at the rear. The source selected at the
front panel would be available at the Record Out jacks and would go to the
Line In or similar at the tape deck end. Likewise the Line Out of the tape
deck would go back to the Tape In or whatever on the receiver.
Simply record whatever source, and monitor levels at the recorder. To play
back the tape, engage the Tape Monitor switch or button at the front panel.
Some tape machines, mostly open-reel types, have three heads which allow
true monitoring of the recorded signal in real-time.

I have one sitting in front of me. You have 2 groups of jacks for the
tape deck, a pair marked "tape mon" and 2 pairs marked " tape 1" and
"tape 2". "Tape mon" is for output from the tape deck, probably
marked "line out" on the tape deck. Connect "tape 1" to "line in" on
the tape deck (for recording). To listen to a recorded tape you need
to push the button marked "monitor" on the front of the receiver.
To record, follow the instructions in Mark's reply, no sense for me to
repeat them here.
