I am gutting my old P3 500 and replacing the MB, RAM, CPU, power supply, and video card. I have a scsi plextor 12x10x32 cd-rw and a scsi plextor 40x cd-rom drive that I want to keep using. My old m/b had onboard scsi(p2b-s) so I will need to get a new scsi card. I want to keep the price down as much as possible. Which one would you guys recommend? The only thing that it would be used with is the cd-rom and cd-rw.

If just for the CD ROM/RW, Crashman is right. The older SCSI Adaptec 2940 will suit your purpose. Here is a link to <A HREF="http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&ht=1&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&ebaytag1code=0&query=adaptec+SCSI+2940+Controller+card" target="_new">E-Bay</A> or if you have a local used PC parts Outlet near by do some camparison shopping. Good luck!

Do I gather that the 2940 would not be suitable for hard disk use? I am changing my system from an old pentium 1 to pentium 4 (2.2gghz). I have a 2940UW with a seagate cheetah 10.000 rpm uw hard disk. Do I need to buy a new scsi card and if so which one?

Be grateful for any advice

When, oh when will SCSI 320 be available to the public? Adaptec has specs on their site, <A HREF="http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product/markeditorial.html?sess=no&prodkey=ultra320_aic7902&type=Common&cat=/Common/Ultra320+SCSI" target="_new">http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product/markeditorial.html?sess=no&prodkey=ultra320_aic7902&type=Common&cat=/Common/Ultra320+SCSI</A> but I haven't found it anywhere, nor have I found any SCSI 320 hard drives.

To start press any key. Where's the "any" key? --Homer Simpson.

You might want to check <A HREF="http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/discsales/guide/" target="_new">Seagate</A> they have Ultra-320 HDD's.

And where do you plan on finding a motherboard to support that transfer rate? Standard PCI slots are only 133MB/s!

Perhaps he doesn't know that he needs a 64 bit PCI controller, and dual processors ane alot of $$$ to get the HDD.

Well, he could get a 66MHz PCI slot board and controller. Hey, is there any 66MHz 64-bit slots or controllers? Anyway, still requiring a server board of course, and probably a Serverset chipset, not ideal for gaming, that's for sure!

Here is one <A HREF="http://www.qlogic.com/products/pci_scsi_products_controllers.asp" target="_new">ISP12160A/66</A> & <A HREF="http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product/proddetail.html?sess=no&prodkey=ASC-29160&cat=%2fTechnology%2fSCSI%2fSCSI+for+Servers" target="_new">Adaptec</A> and <A HREF="http://www.amdmb.com/article-display.php?ArticleID=103" target="_new">AMI Elite</A>. The only 64 bit M/B's avaiable are for dual CPU's. I agree the Ultra-320 is designed for highend servers, not the typical gamer PC.

Ah, yes, 64-bit 66MHz PCI for 533MB/s performance! And PCI-X will be double that!

Yeah, don't you just feel like taking the PCI-X for a test run. (ZOOM-ZOOM), yeah ZOOM-ZOOM-ZOOM-ZOOM!

Sure, that and Intel's next AGP spec with a card that's fast enough to need it!
