i want to connect a seagate 1 TB hard drive to my WNDR#*)) router and automatically back up every time I close the computer down

Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.
To connect it straight to the router will require a NAS or Network Attached Storage device.
Connect it via USB to any networked computer and you'll save money because the simple SATA caddy is a lot cheaper than a NAS.
Windows can back up to any schedule you like but XP requires a passworded account to perform a Scheduled Task. You can set it to power the system down after completion.
