Many of you probably have never lived without a computer, but some of us have. What I find odd is how dependent we are on them now. The net goes down and I feel isolated from the world.

Sigh...

I just can't imagine the world without the internet and computers...but it was once like that.

Without the net and a computer I used to read a lot. I actually went to the library every week when I had my first apt without a computer and the net (no tv either).

Now I can't read.

i find myself complaining cos my computer take longer than 30 seconds to boot up at work onto NT. This includes logon time - then I think Tape Drives - play one side wait 45 minutes and turn it over before you can play the game and I calm down after that.

I used to read a hell of a lot, and then, like you, I got 'net access and at pretty much the same time, satellite TV. Lose either and I feel lost. Haven't read a good book for months.

Might go down the bookstore tomorrow and try to change that. You've just given me a good reason.

I've got a book by my bed and I try to read a few pages before going to sleep each night.

It's different though. A few pages vs a few books....

I remember going to the supermarket and watching the checkout girls used to memorise the prices and type the prices in. That took some doing. Now all they do is scan and press a damn button at the end, it even tells them how much change to give, how easy is that?

I don't use a calculator if I can help it, I can work sums out pretty quickly in my head. Guess my Dad being an accountant helped in that respect. He's the fastest mathematician I know.

I always thought it was neat talking to my Great Grandmother. She remembered when the roads were dirt and they lit the lights with torches.

I just remember calculators coming more than computers, myself! I can remember the day my Dad brought home that first TI calculator!! Just couldn't wait to do some math to press the keys on the magic machine!! Never felt that way with computers, at least to me.

My wife's Great Grandmother was like that. She grew up before WW1 and remembered so much. Was fascinating talking to her. There's a photograph in our local pub of the anchor that was used on the Titanic (was made about 500 yards from my Dad's place) being transported across county, and she was in it! Lining the route. Mr father-in-law always smiles when he sees that picture.

I don't read many books either anymore. The last books that I've read on my own were Slaughterhouse 5 and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainence, but that was a few months ago. I do do a lot of reading on the internet though, so I guess it's better than just watching TV all the time.

im like that if im alone, i remember one weekend a long time ago, my parents went on a camping trip and they took the sattelite reciever to watch tv on vacation (lol). i thought, no big deal, i still got the internet. day after they left the phone company screwed up some project down the street and i had no phone/dsl for 4 days. it SUCKED big. but recently my power went out and me and my roomate ended up just sitting in the dark playing lazer wars with flashlights and reminising, was much better than our ordinary night playing video games or watching tv.

well there are two conflicting things in my life.

A) when computers are going down, the internet, or power, whatever. i am somewhat lsot and don't know what to do. very hard to get work done, talk to people, or find info without one, and often homework cannot be done etc....

B) i also spend a good portion of my year withou computers, e.g. tramping (aka hiking) and other places without access, so i know what life is like without them and really its wonderfull. i would give up a computer (and tv) anyday, as long as i had books, and a newspaper.

we are only dependant on computers if we are expecting them to be around. e.g. if i expect to have the internet, i will not check my bank until i get home, but if i don't have any expectation of the internet i will check my bank account at an ATM, or at the bank cashiers bench.

if i have an essay due in and expect a computer i will not get as many books out for info or quotes...etc...

if i had a computer failure when i was doing a tax return or somthing, i would wait for it to be fixed because i am expecting it to be. but if i were told that NO YOUR OCMPUTER IS DEAD, i would do it by hand.

so its the expectation of a computer.

also without a computer you have more time for hobbies such as 3d computer animation....oh damn there goes my hobby :P. but seriously if i lost a computer and tv i would find better things to do with my life, i would buy a model train set or somthing equally as exciting :P

they are the devil

Funny that, I thought many people develop arm-ache more easily when their computers are ON the 'net...

Hmm.. I wouldn't have too much problem finding entertainment without computers & the 'net. I have a few other interests & I still do enjoy reading a good book.... My main problem would be finding a new job - not much call for programmers in a computer-free world. probably end up working in a bike shop or something.

On the subject of books, if you like Sci-Fi at all Peter F. Hamilton's done some good books.

Sometimes though RC its really scary when you go to a store and say the power goes out, and the kid behind the cash register is clueless as to counting out your change, without the computer to tell them how much change you get back, some basic things should be taught an not omited no matter how advanced our civilization gets. As a carpenter I'd be lost without the ability to add fractions in my head, or figure out the pitch angle on a rafter cut, or a step stringer, from the span and rise, I could see me adding a calculator to my toolbelt and trying to keep from destroying the thing. Having to constantly figure those things out helps to keep your mind sharp, you exercise those abilities, but today????????

Some people just need to go outside. Seriously, it sounds like it's time for an interaction break.

Uplug from your machine, and go outside an interact with humanity. Be sure to wear sunscreen because that orb in the sky like to toast your skin.

The computers, the internet, and yes RC even calculators are all great, but the thing is to incorporate them into your life, not invest your life in THEM.

BTW, input is so much more reqarding when it involves another person.

I've got a few economic equations you can try doing without a calculator.

I alway try doing numbers in my head (especially exact change, which yeah does seem like a lost artform), but sometimes there just things that the brain wasn't meant to do on it's own. Any equation involving Log and LogN would mean pulling out a table and looking it up, even using 'e' in compounding equations makes it far beyond my brain without a large piece of toilet paper to 'work it out'.
I definitely rely more on computers at work/school than at home.

lol, without computers, thing would not be bad at all. There r 2 cases to consider, one where the world has no concept of a computer and the other where things r still run by comps but we don't have a personal comp.
The latter would be great. Having spent tons of time studying lately, the only time I'm on the comp is when studying. Otherwise I'm out and as far away from a comp as possible...beginning to hate the things- they bore me! Without comps kids would be out on the street playing and having real fun, not getting fat and becoming l337 pwnx0rs in games. Comp geeks would actually get gf's or do something useful. Overall, we'd find a different form of entertainment that could quite possibly be much better.
Which would u rather do:
Sit in front of a comp playing CS or whatever.
Or chill with a few friends, have some food and drinks and blow stuff up.

O, and about doing things the old fashioned ways before comps, Bulgaria is in many villages that way. An international telephone in some places is something uncommon. Those r the places I love best, cause the way of life is incredible.

I guess it depends on how old you are!! I was born well before the Microwave oven so if it goes down and the wife is out and the cable goes out I am not as screwed as some of you other younger guys.

I can get a coal oil lantern out and heat water to make a cup of coffee and read a book. Just like childhood regression nice and quiet and familiar.

I recon if you guys lose the internet and electrical power you have to drink Prozac dry without water after you stumble around in the dark for 40 minutes looking for it and you just inadvertently took your wife's Birth control pills. Culture shock to the young ones.

Still I guess they still got the telephone or perhaps a cell phone but how to you validate a 911 call for something as silly as no internet and electrical power?

Yes but right now shes got a dead battery, tried recharging it but it wouldn't sustain the charge, so I'm just going to get a new one, don't want to take a trip and then it decides to quit.

RC I am thoroughly ticked off, personally I think Far Cry up to the point these dumbass monsters started popping up, was one of the best Jungle Warfare games I'd ever played. Now theres monsters everywhere killing the mercenaries before I can get to them, this is really not what I thought I was getting, I should have stuck with Aliens vs Predator, is the entire rest of the game like this??? Do you understand what I mean??? I was enjoying the heck out of the realism of the game, but this monster crap added to the mix, destroys the whole reality aspect of it for me, that doesn't mean I'm not going to finish the game, just play it like Serious Sam.

What a friggin disapointment!!! :frown:

Man, I agree with you there. Try taking algebra without a calculator, or any of the higher math. I'd get lost in the sine tables & such. Then the trusty old slide ruler.

Yea, I'll take a calculator any day.

You know the funny thing about it? We put Man on the moon, cars were built, houses, you name it. Life was pretty much the same as it is now, really!!

I felt the same way as you Ryan the first time I hit the ghouls. They are to hard to kill, for the most part. I told my kids the very same thing, you said.

I'm about through the second time on the next harder level now, & it doesn't seem to bother me as much. I just learned how to control everything when I got through the first time.

I feel a few things with the game:
1. It's to hard in places, but other places are a cake walk.
2. I'd of liked to have seen it just with people, not mutants, as you said.
3. To many controls to be effective at times.
4. Saves are a joke, really.
5. You are seen to easily by the enemy, even in prone position.
6. There's places that you can see the guy your shooting, but the rounds won't hit until you expose yourself more, sucks!
7. There's places that you can't hit anything form where your at.

That's a few of the things I can think of right now. I liked the SOF series better, I believe. Only thing FC has going for it are graphics, but even then, most don't have a vid card good enough to see it. I know I don't with a TI4600. So maybe the game is ahead of it's time. I feel that way. I don't think I'll really feel the game until I can buy a new vid card. I still say, I've never had a new released game put such a hurt on one of my machines.

Like I said before, I'm ready for PainKiller now. Read some good reviews on it. It's more like Serious Sam, & I loved both Serious Sams!!

I agree the AI in FarCry can really screw with you sometimes, you know an enemy is at a certain place, cause the last time you played he blew you away, well he may or may not be in the same place the next time you play the game, you find out he's not there you relax for a second and get blown away from a completely different vantage point, now I'm not complaining about that feature, I think thats what makes this game so addicting.

My biggest gripe would be that you cannot save the game whenever you want, many times I've had to quit playing because I had something else I needed to do, only to have a long way to go to get back to where I was at.

Also trying to find the right soundcard drivers for Win98SE is really becoming a pain in the butt, with Win98SE the VXD drivers seem to work much better. FarCry even made me aware of my case cooling inadequacies with my ATI9800 Pro the game engine will stress the hell out of it, I had to completely revamp the inside of my case, add RAM sinks to the video card, changed the GPU cooler to a higher rated one, clear all the airflow path, and I also changed all my 80mm cooling fans to the same, CFM flow rate, and I'm considering installing either a side fan maybe a 120mm, or top of the case fan, haven't fully decided on that one yet. All that just to play one game, so that had something to do with me getting disapointed when I got to the Mutant monster part, because up to that point it rocked to me.
