Regarding the Mysteries Of The CDRW and Back Ups Revealed article, I was surprised that the drive used to read the copy-protected CDs wasn't specified. I guess the most likely thing is that the tested drives were used both for reading and writing, or maybe reading was done through the DVD player mentioned in the system configuration. Since it is usual to have both a reader and a writer (either to facilitate direct copying, because the reader was there first, for DVD playback or as not to stress the writer in daily use) I wondered if anybody had any knowledge on the importance of the device used to extract the data, and how that choice might influence the results obtained in the above article.

They used the dvd player "Asus DVD-616", http://www.tomshardware.com/storag [...] w-15.html.

I dunno if this influenced the results or not..

Like sanberg said, Tom listed an Asus DVD as the reader.

...but this brings up a good point. With Blindwrite, they recommend using the CDRW as the reader. The theory behind it is if it can read the error, it can write it. I wonder if that's a valid theory?

I have best success reading from my writer as some cdroms don't do the subchannel data as well I always recommend that you rip an image to HDD 1st and burn from that also. I also recommend you install\ run backups from the cdrom as they do not read the atip info on the cdr and thus defeat one of the protections ( detection of cdr rather than pressed cd)

"The theory behind it is if it can read the error, it can write it"

Yep. Right up until the point where msft threatens a lawsuit, then the manufacturer will put out a firmware update that takes that ability away.

And then they will remove all previous firmware updates from their site.

"they do not read the atip info on the cdr"

Clonecd has a ClonecdTray trainer that overrides the Atip, if you absolutely need it.
