Print "Print to file" output file

In Win7, the MS procedure for printing the output of a "print to file" operation (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Print-to-file) doesn't work to a USB printer (HP DJ2050). Neither the correct port USB003 nor the LPT1: port works, even when I "Configure the Port" to include LPT1:. I can't read the file (it has no extension) in any program I've found. I see that I can do the same task easily by printing to .pdf, but is there any way to get back the receipt data contained in these "print to file" files??

When you "print to file", a .pdf or .xps is created. Search for the .pdf and .xps files on your computer. .pdf can be opened by adobe reader .xps by xps viewer, a feature in Window 7.
