Hi Everyone

I recently purchased the WD 80 gig Caviar 7200rpm /w 8 mb cache. What I did is I mounted it into my computer and then I used partition magic to fdisk/format (I'm not sure which i the right term). I did a logical (I think it was logical) format and I chose the quick option.

The drive displays at 74.5 gigs. I Was wondering if tihs is normal or if this is because I chose the quick choie or what?

Thanks,
Cooj

This is probably due to difference between how the manufacturer reads disk capacity and how the computer is reading it. In computer terms, 1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes, where in manufacturers' terms, 1kilobyte = 1000 bytes.

Yup. Arrow is right.

1024 bytes (1KB) x 1024 = 1MB x 1024 = 1GB.

1024 x 1024 x 1024 = 1073741824. 74.5 of these = 79,993,765,888 bytes, or approx 80GB. It's a sales gimmick. Everyone suffers from it, so don't worry.
