I was at a computer shop getting price quotes on AMD systems and the owner told me that the SB Audigy Gamer is the same card as Audigy MP3 but with different software. Is this true?? Do MP3's playing on an Audigy Gamer sound good??

Yes, they are the exact same card. The only difference is the software with which it's bundled. mp3s do sound good on the audigy gamer, but I think they sound better on the turtle beach santa cruz.

They are the same card, and you'd be better off buying a TBSC.

Audigy Gamer = Audigy MP3 = Audigy Platinum = Audigy Plantinum EX = Audigy OEM = any other flavor of Audigy that I missed. ;=) Actually, the OEM card is slightly different in that it does not have gold plated contacts (so the contacts will corrode away in 35 years instead of 800 years).

The difference is the software bundle and the presence of the Audigy Drive breakout box in the Platinum versions.

Remember also that there's the 5 1/4" drive version for the Platinum, and the external box w/ remote version for the Platinum eX.

I guess i'm never going to understand how good this card is until i hear one for myself, but my Live! Platinum still sounds amazing, weather it's owning people on Counterstrike, recording my own songs, or listening to mp3's.

I'd like to think of myself as quite an audiophile, but i'm obviously missing something here :)

The word "audiophile" is very subjective. It means something different to different people. I don't consider myself an audiophile, and I do semi-pro live audio.

heh for me it's someone who takes a real interest in audio reproduction, EQ etc etc

Somethin like that, I'd say its someone who tries to get the best reproduction the possibly can within their budget because they truely enjoy music listening.
