Hi,
I am about to order a pioneer 106s and was wondering about the possibility of it overheating. I have read in other posts that this can happen, should i consider ordering a fan olso. If a fan is required is there any specific one that would be best. Thanks.

Well if that did happen it may just be an isolated incident. Almost everyone who has a pioneer that I know of has reported good results with it.

Perhaps you are referring to the recent topic on the Kenwood 72x overheating?

Like many others, I like this drive very much.

Thanks for the reply. I must have misread something or other. I have been looking at this drive for a while now and it appears to be highly thought off. It will be a nice upgrade from my Hitachi GD-2000. By for now.

I've had my Pioneer for over a year without any problems. If you do get it make sure it's the slot loading not the tray. It's only a couple of bucks more but it elminates the annoying tray. Why don't all CD-ROMs, DVD-ROM's, etc. use slots instead of trays?

I have a Pioneer 105F and it's fine, I wonder what the difference is between them, what speed is the 106? My 105 is 16X max.

not too much
the 115/105S/116/106S are all 16x dvd and 40x cd speeds.
its just that the 115/105S are earlier models, and apparently they arn't as good/fast doing DAE (Digital Audio extraction)

yep
despite the fact that the pioneer drive wasnt approaching the limits of ata33, let alone ata66 lol

best the 106S can theoretically do is around 21mb/sec (actual max is lower), well below the limit of ata33.

Nice sig!

Also correctamundo on the 33/66 thing. People drive me nuts when they think they need ata 133 for a drive that can't go half that.

I've had a Pioneer 16x for some time now and it has been great. It is several times faster then the 12x (lol) that came with my dell system.

Even though the Pioneer has been good I most recently went with Lite On because according to http://www.cdrinfo.com the LO is faster and also because the LO was only $40 delivered from newegg. I like the LO so far but can not say anything about the long term cause it is brand new.

I, for one, have a problem with my A06.
It only works in PIO mode. In DMA mode 4 it doensn't read anything and crashes the system.

Running on a Asus P4s333

Maybe you have an answer for this...

hmmmm. cant really give much advice beyond the usual...
check the UDMA status in the bios.
make sure your using the right cable.
can try removing other drives from that cable.
check the primary and secondary ide channels for their UDMA status.

i have to admit my pioneer 106S hasnt been completly flawless. very occasionally i do something and windows 2000 puts the ah heck back to PIO mode. never found out why either :(
just one of those wierd windows things.

Ok...
After a couple of months in PIO, I finally found a "XP update" to my Asus P4S333's IDE.
Result:
UDMA Mode 2!

Couldn't they have told people about it not working perfectly?
I had it in PIO in 98SE, so it's not a "XP update"...

BTW, what is the difference between mode 2 & mode 4?

Thanks

heh. wellcome to the wonderful world of ASUS.
UDMA mode refers to its ATA speed

UDMA 6 = ata133
UDMA 5 = ata100
UDMA 4 = ata66
UDMA 2 = ata33

(but i allways wondered what happened to UDMA 3...)

The mechanism used in slot-loaders is slightly more complex that that for tray loaders, and they can scratch the disc. If you look at all the domestic CD players, you'll not find a single slot loader. Slot loading is used in cars purely because of the space constraints.
