How reliable USB1.1 external HDD?

I've heard that connecting an external IDE hard drive via the USB1.1 port is unreliable. Can anyone corroborate or refute this information?

I can "corroborate" that the USB is good for:

1. Keyboards
2. Mice / Trackballs
3. Joysticks
4. Webcams
5. Printers

I can also "corroborate" that the USB is not good for:

1. Cd burners
