I'm going to order a new comp soon, and i was wondering if i could transfer the 20 GB hd i have in my current comp to the new one without any problems (while keeping all the data stored on it). I've used it only for data storage (it's not the boot drive) and it's full of video files, audio files, installation files, patches, and saved games that i don't want to lose (i've downloaded gigabytes and gigabytes on my 56K connection...losing it would be a huge pain in the ass). the comp i'm on now is running win98, and the comp i'm getting is going to run winXP pro. can i just take the HD out of this comp and stick it in the new one and expect all the files to still work?

You should be able to put it into the new computer as a secondary drive.

Are you positive about that, running two different operating systems if XP is a clean full install, I don't think it will work, but you may know more about the compatability than I do, NTSF Vs FAT 32.

1. plug the old hd in the new comp. transfer data between both disks.
2. plug the old hd in the new comp. set it to the first boot disk. boot with your old hd on your new comp.

Yeah, it should work. WinXP is able to read both NTFS and FAT32 partitions, but with Win98, you cannot read NTFS partitions. Since he's going from Win98 to NTFS, he should be fine.
Cheers :)
