I need the help of you folks who own or have owed this great little
British amp. I purchased a Quad 405 (not 405-2) on Ebay. There are
some inconsistencies with this unit that have me confused.
Unit Serial # 37277
Board #'s M12368 ISS9
These don't seem consistent from the infromation I've read. Is this a
lter version of the original 405 - but with older model Boards or
what??
In addition, the rear panel does not have the typical circular voltage
selector dial. In the general location of where the dial would be is a
single screw head. On the inside that screw holds in place what is
clearly a factory installed second set of power line e fuses (they look
like 6 amp fuses) in addition to the standard single 5 amp rear panel
mounter fuse. So in total, there are 7 fuses for this unit. 2 - 4 amp
fuses on each board, the 2 - 6 amp fuses mounted to the inside of the
back panel and then the single inline 5 amp fuses on the back panel
that is externally replaceable.
Finally, on the left sie of the rear panel is what I am guessing is
some warning language - but in French!!
So, for you folks familar with the Quad 405, is this a US imported amp
OR an amp imported to say the French speaking area of Canada? Second,
why are there 2 additional power supply fuses mounted on the inside of
the back panel? I have not seen this arangement in internal photos
I've ever seen before.

According to Quad's tech manual, M12368 ISS9 was used for S/N 9000 to 29000
and M12368 ISS10 up to S/N 59000. Your unit should have been fitted with
ISS10.

Amps sold in France were the same as UK/International versions, save for the
user manual and mains lead.

I hear you François; however, the fact remains that there is NO
voltage selector on the rear panel - simply a blank, unused area of
sheet metal! The only thing there is the screw head I mentioned and
the 2 internal fuses mounted - quite professionally (at the factory??)
- on a bracket secured to the inside face of the rear panel.

Not what I have seen before!
Sure it's not a home-made clone ? A group of us at my work even went to
the extent of casting heatsinks ! (We had a foundry in our organisation ...)
and producing PCBs.
You have a series 1 Quad 405 , the circuit board went
through a number of revisions , info about each revision
is in the technical service data .. contact Quad and request
service data.
Re blank plate this is unusual. If there is no voltage selection
it would indicate the internal wiring is set for one voltage alone
and reference to the service data will inform the voltage
the transformer is wired for. An inspection of the internal
amplifier - with power off ** should reveal what wiring is
present. ** Don't open case with power cord connected.
The alternatives I know of with 405's are a model serving
the LS/8 Rogers loudspeaker which had crossover components
and XLR plugs. There was also a monoblock amp which
Quad sold a conversion kit for as well.
An email to Quad info@quad-hifi.co.uk might better answer
your question, post back here so we all find out.... Lara
