i have this strange thing called win me installed on my older computer because its way to slow for a working win2k...
and i was wondering how to prevent this thing from loading the GUI
i have tried to change msdos.sys like in win 9X..then i renamed win.com...he launched the GUI anyway...
i dont want to use a boot disk...if i have to ill kill this crap off and reinstall win98

MS really wants to make people think win me is more than just a GUI for a stone age OS..and so they hide the core as deep as they can altough this makes the whole thing even worse

i really think win me is the greatest [-peep-] MS has ever made...
they put the work into this stupid "_RESTORE" stuff instead of making an OS which dont has to be restored 4 times a week...

I beleive the reason why ya can't get it to go into dos mode is cause they had supposely removed it.

At least that is what I read.

The key is, supposedly WinMe had DOS removed. It didn't really. It's just hiding. Go download the patch from http://www.geocities.com/mfd4life_2000 and then all of your old msdos.sys/config.sys/autoexec.bat tricks will work just fine and dandy.

u can bet that there are side effects..one of them is that win me is unable to boot...for some reasen i dont care...now i have a reason to kill it *g*
after executing autoexec.bat it just says: press alt+ctrl+del to reboot and does nothing..
i wonder what will happen if i run win98 setup...
will it be able to install over me?
and will it wipe out LILO in the mbr?
maybe i should just copy the original files back and use win me..but somehow i dont want to *g*

You have to follow the instructions on the site EXACTLY. If you get in the situation where it won't boot, just SYS the drive with a WinMe emergency boot disk (you do have one, right?). I messed my system up a couple of times myself, but SYSing the drive always brought it back. When I followed the instructions to the letter, it worked great.

If you do it properly, no, there are no side effects as far as I can see, as long as you're not loading any funky problem-causing DOS device drivers. I run my WinMe system this way.

well..i had no win me boot disk..but i restored the system with the backup files of command.com and io.sys i had made before patching...
the only problem i had was that this crapy "copy" command cant handle hidden files and i had no attrib.exe on the win98 boot disk...
gues what..the win me version of attrib does not work with a win98 boot disk!

i thought the patched system did not work because of not correctly setted attribs. but that was not the problem...i have tried to boot with the correct settings and it (of course) did not work...
