I hate to say it, but I would look at other brands. IBM has been having many problems with their 75GXP and some 60GXP. I own the 60GB 60GXP and am keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't die. Though I have to admit, its very fast. I wish they were more reliable cause I would love to purchase another to fool around with my raid contoller

In a single disk configuration, Western Digital 1000 and 800 JB with their 8 MB of cache, are probably faster, but in a RAID 0 configuration I tested that a couple of IBM 120GXP is faster then a couple of D740 Maxtor, even when using a UDMA 133 controller. I never tested WD JB in a RAID configuration and I'm curious to know if a couple of WD JB can reach the performances of a couple of IBM 120GXP (the best score with Sandra 2002 was 53340 with a FASTTrack 100 TX2 on a ASUS A7V333 and 4in1 4.37, raid patch 1.02 and USB 2.0 disabled). Anyway the IBM drives are very fast and require low CPU resources. IBM released also a software to solve the firmware bug for 75GXP and 60GXP (they say). The 120 GXP reputation suffers because of the already famous 333 hours/month issue which was already solved by eliminating this issue from the technical reference for this drive (???????????????).

the western digital JB is faster than the IBM drives... but the smallest one you will find is the 80Gb 800JB.

after my experiences i would avoid the 60gxp series. ive had alot of problems with mine.

besides, the 60gxp is 'old' technology. its design is based on 20gb/platter density. the current range uses 40gb/platter.
of these you have 5 choices.
the 120GXP
maxtor D740X
western digital in the 2mb or 8mb versions
or the seagate.

i reccomend the 8mb W.D., followed by the Maxtor D740X

My 60gb 60gxp just died today. Lost a ton of work, and unfortunate for me not all of it was backed up.

My advice is to get two and mirror them or stay away.

Same here. Been there. At least I had a data backup since I never trusted
my 60 GXP.

I would not get an IBM hard drive because they are not as reliable as they use to be. The fastest IDE drive should be the Special Edition from WD but I do not think they are availible at $80.

I hope it keeps going for you. My 60GXP 60 gig lasted 8 months. It's is only the second HDD I have
ever lost. The first was years ago, a 1 gig Seagate.

""I've had my 40GB 60GXP nearly a year and have never had any trouble out of it""

Hehe, same here, gg, those guys don't know how keep their investments cool and alive, hehe.

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

Mine are fine too. Nearly a year too.

LHG: Did you see my post in your WD800 thread?

The scores on my 60GXP tell a different story. Have you done more tests?

so are the 120 gxps faster and more reliable? I thought the 75 gxp was slower than the 60gxp and assumed that the lower the number was the newer and faster the drive was was I mistaken? I realy dont have any more than 80 dollars to spend and whoever it was that posted about their 1 gig seagate failing mine just did, I have built my whole computer out of very modern parts but hadn't gotten around to power supply's and hard drives :( I had 3 6 gigs going for some time then about a month ago the 300watt power supply failed and surged inward (deer power supplies realy suck) and it destroyed my hard drives. then I installed a 250watt power cooling ps that I had gotten with a case a few years back and it surged ruining my 4 gig and my 1 gig seagate that I had had for years. but I got a 500watt ps on the way hopefully it will be enough for my uber elite system and wont destroy any more hard drives. please give me a good suggestion something 40-60gb's that is fast. maybe a 120gxp deskstar?

no. im guessing because IBM had so many troubles with the 75gxp they went conservative, thus the top of the line model in the 60gxp is 60Gb, not 80.

The 75GXP uses 15Gb platters. Thus the 75Gb version uses a total of 5 platters!
The 60GXP has 20Gb platters, with the 60Gb model using only 3 platters.

in the early days 5 platter drives were common, my 16GP had 5. Nowerdays due to noise, heat & reliability issues drive makers seem to be limiting their drives to 3 platters, at least in the IDE arena.
the 1200JB uses 3, as does the seagate baracuda IV and the 120GXP. the D740X only uses 2, but thats cauz their flagship model is only 80Gb.

and your 500W psu is mooore than enough to power everything... and a peltier or two.

as for a reccomendation, well i cant reccomend the 120GXP due to my troubles.
the maxtor D740X is a good drive, but the best is the WD 800JB, but thats 80gb or greater only.

i have two 40GB 120GXP IBM mounted in raid 0 configuration which work very well. i recommend this disk because of its performances, its quietness, its efficiency & its inexpensiveness.
