Wireless router connected to a multiport router connected to a cable modem:can't

Hello,
I just moved into a new house. The house is wired with cat5e. my plan was to connect my cable modem to a multiport router. All of the cat5e cables will connect here. I planned on having my wireless router connect into a cat5e rj45 plug in the house. my laptop knows the wireless is there but it can't communicate. What do I need to do to allow communication? IP and subnet addressing?

make sure your laptop has the latest service pack for your OS. that clears up wireless communication problems. Windows XP is SP3, Windows 7 is SP1. Hopefully its not Windows Vista hehe
