Doesn't recognize my RAM

I have 2 sticks of 256MB DDR 2100. I only had one of them in until now. I put the second one in also now and the BIOS and SiSoft Sandra one recegnizes 256MB still. I checked and the memory is in tight. Why is this happening?

If you put the new one in and take the old one out, does it recognize its full 256MB?

Ok, now it recognizes 384. When I used to have both the chips in it would recognize the full 512MB. I just borrowed the 256MB to my friend while he waited for his RAM to ship.
