Whats the best monitor to buy for under $500. I need to buy one very
soon. I heard the Event TR8N is supposed to be good. Is there any that
is pro or almost pro quality for under $500. Thanks.

I would actually recommend going with Event 20/20's. I personally
think the quality of those is better than the TR8N's. You can get
those new for $300 through guitar center or musicians friend, or you
can typically buy them used for around $225 with shipping.
You will however need an amp, if you watch on ebay, you can probably
find a hafler p 1500 for around $250.
This would keep you under $500 and will give you better clarity than
anything else i've heard for that price.
The only other option that i could think of is the Behringer truth
monitors. Musician friend is carrying them for $299 and they're
powered. I don't think they're as good as the events, but if you need
to tighten your budget, they would work

The Tannoy Reveals are around $320, and are much more honest speakers, and
much better sounding than Events, better than the Yamaha NS10's which once cost
around the same amount.

My big time grammy winning engineer friend likes the new Yamaha NS5
(if that's the right number) self powered. It might be worth checking
out. I haven't heard them.

I found the low end on those really bloated, but I could see them working
well in some kinds of rooms. On the whole I'd certainly go for the Reveal
over anything else that has been mentioned in this thread.
