Can I turn the screen completely off on the t2 to save battery life
while playing mp3s?

there are some apps that will do this, some will allow you to lower it
past the current lowest setting

Pocket Tunes also has an option to blank the screen after a user defined
period. Energy Dimmer is an application that allows complete control over
the back light from off to full on: T2 in full sunlight works OK with the
backlight off.
