Let me present you with my dilemma. About a month ago, I purchased an Audigy MP3+ sound card, getting rid of my Live! Value. Back then I had XP, but as soon as I plugged in the card, I experienced a number of problems, the major one of which was that I couldn't get the drivers working.
Since XP was a fairly fresh installation, I got rid of it, and went back 2000, which, as I understood, was 100% supported by the Audigy. I was a bit bummed about losing XP, but whatever... Unfortunately, the problems didn't stop with 2000 either...I managed to sorta/kinda fix the winamp skipping problem (moving the card to a different PCI slot, messing with the buffer and the directsound acceleration and the winamp waveout). My problem is that sound still quite often skips in games (especially Neverwinter Nights). I'm kinda getting tired of it all, so I'm thinking of getting a new sound card. My local CompUSA sells both the Turtle Beach SC and the GameTheater XP. If I get a new card, I also want to go back to Windows XP.
Do you guys have any recommendations?
This is what I got:
Athlon 1.2GHz
1GB of PC2100 RAM
GeForce 2 Ultra
Antec 430W power supply
burner, dvd, hard drives, etc.
Klipsch 4.1 speakers
but as soon as I plugged in the card, I experienced a number of problems, the major one of which was that I couldn't get the drivers working.
Are you running a VIA-based chipset? These chipsets have known bugs with the PCI bus which sometimes cause conflicts with certain PCI cards, including Creative. If so, I would get another sound card.
Otherwise, I'm not sure what your problem is but check your Device Manager and make sure there are no IRQ conflicts etc.
Via & Creative......yer right that must be what he's using...but it aint just via's fault=) Creative seemingly refuses to make any attempt at compatibility with Via and has no overt dealings with them. Highly recommend using an Amd/Amd or Intel/Intel chipset and avioding Via like the plague....but thats just my opinion.
/me shakes his head
Two companies that both attempt to rip everyone off and use legal avenues and money and power to win market share....bad idea to mix them.

ya got that right, check out this thread and scroll halfway down to Corsair3200's long post on how to solve Audigy problems. Lol, notice how many are Via-specific. My favorite line:
"KR7A(-RAID) only: Several reports that the combination of an older 3COM network interface card (NIC), including the 3Com 3C905B-TXM card, and Audigy can result in problems, including damage to Audigy cards."
Holy batman, DAMAGE to Audigy cards just from a PCI conflict?!!? LOL. Stay *far away* from those Via chipsets, boys and girls...
KR7A(-RAID) only: Several reports that the combination of an older 3COM network interface card (NIC), including the 3Com 3C905B-TXM card, and Audigy can result in problems, including damage to Audigy cards.
don't take this case as a generality.
if you know you don't know, the way could be more easy ...
Your problem is NOT with the Via chipset - it is with XP operating system. I have an Epox 8KTA3+Pro with the 686B chipset and an Audigy X-gamer. Only difference between the MP3 and X-gamer is the software that comes with the card. The XP vs Audigy problem you are experiencing is WELL KNOWN!
