I have a BurnIT CDR830 which does not like the new discs. I have tried
Verbatim cd-r's 80 min 700 MB., Imation 80 min 700mb's, and Imation
74min 650mb's and have had no luck. Does anyone what kind of disc I need
to use ?

Are you telling us that it likes "the old discs"? Which ones?

It worked fine the last time I used it about two years ago. I had a
Tascam CDR and do not know which cd's were burned
on the HHB and which were done on the Tascam. I was trying to find out
which discs people are using with the HHB so I will know what to order.
I may end up having to junk it out using it only as a player and buy
another Tascam.

I am using the Mitsuis with my CDR800 and am very happy, but it sounds to
me like you have a broken machine.

Why not get it repaired?

If you have tried 3 different brands it is much more likely that you
have a malfunctioning burner---or an "operator error".

That's a shame.
If the 830 is not working correctly, it may cost you less to get it repaired
than buying a new one. Tell them you haven't used it in 2 years. That may
be a factor.

I had a similiar problem with my TASCAM CD-RW5000 and ended up buying
Taiyo Yuden Silver. They're rated at 52X but when forget to change the
default in my one computer that has a drive that fast, they don't burn
at that speed in that drive. But they do work at real time (1X) speed
in the CD recorder, and that's what counts. They were about $38 per
100 at Media Supply last time I bought them.

Other CD blanks that have worked in the TASCAM consistently are the
Verbatim disks that look like 45 RPM records. Micro Center has them on
sale right now pretty cheap.

Imation tend to rebrand cheap Taiwanese CD's so I wouldn't suggest using
those. Verbatim sell a wide range of CD's, some good and some not so
good so you may have been unlucky and picked the not so good ones. The
more expensive Verbatims have a good reputation. I'd also suggest trying
some of HHB's own blanks (which are usually Mitsui) or CD's made by
Taiyo Yuden.

Cheers.

James.

The problem is not the burner or cleaning. The problem is using discs
that are rated for fast burn speeds. In order to burn a disc ar 40+x
the laser must be "turned up" really hot because it only has a
fraction of a millisecond to burn a 0 or a 1. This is fine for
computers but in stand alone audio recorder they are errors waiting to
happen. Stand alone burners burn the actual disc at 8x or less. They
dye layer in an 8x certified disc is considerably different than the
52x disc they sell at best buy. Solve all your problems and go buy the
HHB 8x certified media. the model number for the discs is CDR80S. I
know you can find them at www.bswusa.com (broadcast supply worldwide).
They are true silvers 8x HHB certified discs for around $1.06 each.

Every CD writer does a laser power test when you insert a disk. It
cranks up the power until it can successfully write to the disk, and
that's the setting it uses. This is invisible to most computer users,
but most stand-alone CD recorders show the user what's happening. It's
usually called OPC (Optimum Power Calibration?) and the usual
situation with certain disks rated for high speed writing is that this
test fails - the laser can't be turned up 'loud' enough to write on
the disk.

> Stand alone burners burn the actual disc at 8x or less.

Actually, they burn at 1X (real time), no more, no less, unless it has
a copy mode that runs at a higher speed.

At a trade show I attended last year that had a lot of media
suppliers, my "question for the day" was about blanks that would work
in a real-time stand-alone CD recorder. "Hmmmmm . . . . " was the
usual answer. Mitsui and Taiyo Yuden both said they had disks that
would work well in those recorders, but they're not normally stocked
by the big-box stores, you need to order from places like Cassette
House or Media Supply.

The Verbatum disks that look like 45 RPM records are rated at 16X
speed and probalby work OK in a stand-alone recorder. Micro Center
currently has them on sale for $4 for a pack of 50. I really should
pick up some and try them in my TASCAM.
