Hi guys i need some help, i have two hard drives in my computer, a 20g, and a 40g. i am running out of space on my 20g, and want to transfer everything to the 40g drive, i have installed xp on the 40g drive. i notice that xp has a transfer wizard to copy your files and settings to another drive. can i use that, or is there a special program i should use to do it, i just dont feel like installing everthing again on the other drive. Thanks fer your help guys

Before i put my ATHLON XP on prozac, it thought it was a PENTIUM 4

I just reformated my 100gig HD over at a friends last week and all I did was just grabbed the folders/files I wanted and threw 'em on my friends HD. Then when I was done grabbed em back off. My point just use explorer, its fast, reliable, and easy. Drag and drop is where its at!

If it's just the files, then use explorer.

Here's a description for the <A HREF="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/columns/crawford/november12.asp" target="_new">Files and Settings Transfer Wizard</A>

My personal website, chock full of tips and other computer stuff. No ads, banners, or catches. It's currently based on Windows XP, but Windows 2000 stuff to come.

The best idea is probably to use a program like Norton Ghost to clone the partition onto the new disk. Just copying files via Explorer probably is NOT a good idea, especially if your partition is FAT32, and definitely not if you also want to tranfer your programs from one drive to the other.

Norton Ghost doesn't clone hard drives...it just creates images into a single file. If you're moving everything to another drive, and you want to keep programs intact, check out <A HREF="http://www.fssdev.com/products/drive2drive/" target="_new">Drive2Drive</A> or <A HREF="http://www.fssdev.com/products/casperxp/" target="_new">CasperXP</A> which are cheaper and better than <A HREF="http://www.powerquest.com/drivecopy/" target="_new">Powerquest's DriveCopy</A>. I haven't tried any of these, but Drive2Drive was featured in Lockergnome, while I've yet to see any publications about DriveCopy.

<A HREF="http://www.btvillarin.com" target="_new">btvillarin.com</A> will be down for a couple of days. My host (<A HREF="http://www.cyberwings.com" target="_new">Cyberwings</A> is doing a physical move to a location in North Virginia, that's estimated for 3 days. If you have site thru them, keep up to date by checking <A HREF="http://www.cwstatus.com" target="_new">here</A> periodically. (Note: That was just created today, so it'll be up in 2-3 days.) My alternate email address is in my profile.

Yes, it does. :) At least Ghost 2002 does, but I'm pretty sure older versions do as well.
