My netgear router cant find my ethernet adaptor acer ast 180

I recently purchaesed a Netgear wnr3500l. I have an acer desktop and when i run the cd it can't find my adaptor. there is no adaptor or it is disapled. I can plug my computer directly intomy modem and it works fine. I am running windows xp and have Marvell ukon ethernet 88e8055 ethernet controler. My lap top can connect through the wireless and also throught the direct cable so it has to be something with the desktop. Any help will be appreceiated.

The Netgear wnr3500l is a wireless router. it does not require any cd to install. You access the router settings by navigating to the configuration page using your web browser.
