Adhoc support? and wireless settings?

I just purchased a new asus router model rt-n66u dual band wireless router paires with an asus usb-n53 wireless adaptor and I'm not getting very good performance. Can anyone help me with the router settings, and what is adhoc support all about? what does adhoc mean? thanks for the help!
